A DIY Housewarming Gift Basket

Putting together and giving gifts used to be something that I dreaded. I would overthink the gift a million times, always wondering if I was getting the recipient something that they would truly enjoy and appreciate, or if I was just wasting their space and my money. But as I’ve grown older I’ve learned about getting presents for others and now putting together gifts for all sorts of occasions is a favorite of mine!

When my husband and I got married, we moved into our first apartment together and it got me thinking about housewarming gifts and what items I was thankful to have in our new space. I thought I would put together a housewarming basket of all my favorite and essential things that have made the transition into this new apartment easier. Anytime someone moves, the event is as stressful as it is exciting. Giving even a small gift to help encourage and ease the transition is a welcoming gesture towards old friend or new neighbor! The main idea to choose a theme and purchase a few things that fit. I started with a kitchen theme, but you could choose a decor theme, plant theme, or even a food theme such as beverages or breakfast items so they don’t have to worry about cooking in the morning.

I started with this adorable basket that I found at my local Ross. World Market and Michaels also have some cute and affordable baskets that would serve well for putting together a gift basket.

These items are from quite a few retailers, but in general you can head to a Target, World Market or Crate and Barrel and choose a few things from the one retailer. Shopping online at Amazon is also a great way to pull together a few items in a single place. For the essential items I included some dish towels (you can seriously never have enough), wooden spoons, a whisk and my favorite dish washing soap from World Market. From the decorative category I included some fun copper salt and pepper shakers, a bar of soap and a marble and copper cheese board for serving appetizers on. And finally from the indulgent category I added a candle and matches, a cooking magazine to inspire cooking and a bottle of wine. Choose an item or two from each category and you’ll be set with a gift that your recipient will both appreciate and love!
